Overview of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology

VISION OF DEPARTMENT

The department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology has been in existence since very inception of this institution. Presently there are 4 teaching staffs. The department has class rooms, Practical labs, demonstration halls with LCD projectors, a state of art museum with a display of charts, wet specimens, bones & X-rays, toxicology specimens, and ballistics specimens.

There is a well-equipped mortuary to demonstrate Postmortem examination, with 4 body cold storage facility.

The department believes in group dynamics and works integrated with the different departments of the institutes.

Facilities Equipments& Special services in Forensic Medicine Department

For Student

  1. 2nd& 3rd 1stMBBS Students – About 200 students per batch
  2. Lectures: in Forensic Pathology, Clinical Forensic Medicine & Forensic Toxicology – lectures per CBME curriculum.

III. Practical: – in Forensic Pathology, Clinical Forensic Medicine & Forensic Toxicology – As per CBME curriculum.

  1. Autopsy Procedure Demonstration
  2. Court procedures demonstration: for interested students along with teachers

B.Internship Training:

Interns training consists of

  • Autopsy techniques, Drunkenness, Injury Certificates, MCCD, Rape Victim & Accused examination, Medical Law & Ethics, Age Estimation, recent advances in Forensic medicine and toxicology, medicolegal case discussions and journal clubs.
  • Role Play on different topics
  • Poster & Power Point Presentation

INFRASTRUCTURE OF DEPARTMENT

The department is located on 3rd floor of main building complex of Banas Medical College & Research Institute, Moriya Campus.

The department has adequate facilities to teach 200 students, with good infrastructure of classrooms, practical halls and demonstration halls with LCD projectors. We have anthropology instruments to conduct studies on anthropology and sex determination. In expert opinion cases, there are facilities to determine the age and sex of the individual, besides the stature of the individual is determined by the anthropology instruments. The museum has a large collection of bones, which were utilized to conduct many research projects and publications in International & National Journals.

The department library has more than 85 textbooks and journals with attached reading room.

The departmental library  has different standard textbooks of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology and are issued to Faculties.

 

CONCEPT OF TEACHING

A conceptual knowledge of FMTis delivered by interactive lecturers, small group discussions, and clinical case presentations.

All the attributes of adult learning are followed and special emphasis is given to ECE and SDL. Students are given feedback after every formative assessment and their reflections are also sought.
